Chicago (2002)

Director: Rob Marshall
Starring: Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere
Two death-row murderesses develop a fierce rivalry while competing for publicity, celebrity, and a sleazy lawyer’s attention.
‘Chicago’ is a jazz-infused comedy musical, with satire aplenty – and I love it!
‘Chicago’ is a perfect illustration of sensationalism (especially back in the 1920’s way before social media existed). Cabaret performer Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is jailed for having killed her sister and her lover, whom she caught red-handed having an affair. Shortly thereafter Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger) is jailed for having killed her lover, who made empty promises to her.
I loved the way the character back stories were told through musical sequences (which were fantastic, by the way!). The lyrics are hilarious. The film features excellent sound and lighting, editing, and great choreography. The casting choices were also fantastic. Richard Gere stars as lawyer Billy Flynn, who only represents clients for the money and the fame. (The puppet master scene was oh-so-effective)! My favourite character, is Mama – excellently portrayed by Queen Latifah. I mean, she just stole the show!
Whether you like jazz or not, you’re sure to love ‘Chicago’. Who would have thought murder could be so entertaining? This is a very clever script indeed!
‘Chicago’ was a critical and commercial success. The film earned $306.8 million on a $45 million budget. It received 186 award nominations, winning 57 including 6 Oscars (Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Sound).
Would I watch it again? Definitely.
