Celebrating Sleep

This past year, my wife’s youngest sister gave birth to her first child. As you might expect, it brought back all the memories of when each of my boys were infants.

It is very true that you never understand the parent child bond until you have experienced it yourself. Before having kids you tolerate new parents when they talk incessantly about their new little one. You think that they’ve gone off the deep end and while you think you understand what they are going through, you really don’t have a clue. Once you are a parent, you cannot imagine what could be more entertaining than watching your infant sleep. S/he is just so cute and nothing else can compare.

As the weeks and months go on and you find that the little one does not sleep for as long as you would like them to and whenever they fall asleep you try to close your own eyes. Both of our boys were bottle fed, so the division of labor was even. I envied those dads of breast-fed babies knowing they likely got more sleep than I did!

For our first child we split the night. I would stay up late and cover anything until 2AM. At that point, my wife would take over. This worked as it was predictable and when the baby cried when you were off-duty, you would just smile and roll over.

For our second, we alternated nights. You may have one horrid night but you knew the next one would be full of sleep. I can’t say that one strategy was better than the other, but each worked in its own way.

One morning, I woke up to the sunlight streaming into my window. I looked over and my wife was sleeping beside me. The baby had not cried at all that night. First time ever!!!! My wife awoke shortly after I did and I looked at her and said with a huge smile on my face, “He slept through the night!”

She looked at me with a disgusted look and replied, “No….YOU slept through the night!”

  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar

  • 3 tablespoons orange juice

  • 3 tablespoons lime juice

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

Directions:

Score both sides of beef by cutting 1/4 inch deep diagonal lines about 1 inch apart in surface of steak to form diamond-shaped designs.

Combine brown sugar, juices, garlic, ginger, grated peels, salt, pepper, cinnamon and cloves in 2-quart glass dish.

Add beef; turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate steak at least 2 hours.

Remove beef from marinade; discard marinade.
