Knoch Area High School grad and current Behrend senior Hannah Carlino is a young woman of many talents. The former Knoch volleyball player has transitioned into a collegiate golfer after not participating in the sport for her high school team. After playing some golf with her father and working at a country club near home, Hannah became interested in the game and wanted to learn more about the game. With the help of her father, Hannah began to improve at the game although she was not exactly always fond of golf. However, her attitude towards the sport has drastically changed over the last few months.

Golf is a game that requires great patience, concentration, and skill. It is a game that people can enjoy playing in many different ways including putt-putt or hitting balls at the driving range. Golf is also a game people can play and enjoy over their entire lifetimes. From young children to folks enjoying their retirement; golf serves as a game they can all enjoy and partake in. Golf is also a game of business. Many agreements and deals are negotiated on the golf course, so the ability to showcase even the slightest skill in the sport is important for those in the business world. For Carlino, the game of golf serves as a new opportunity to compete as collegiate athlete.

Just a few months ago, Hannah did not envision herself dedicating time to athletics with her already extremely busy schedule. As a double major in business economics and marketing, Hannah dedicates a great amount of time to her studies. In fact, her proactiveness has allowed her to obtain a double major and graduate a semester early. In addition, she serves as a research assistant and a teaching assistant in the economics department. She has completed and assisted in two research projects in her time at Behrend while also beginning research on a third. Carlino also serves as the president of both the Marketing and Society of Undergraduate Economists clubs. While Hannah certainly has invested a great amount of time and effort into maintaining her unblemished 4.0 GPA, she has also helped many others in need. On an alternative spring break trip, she has helped those in need after natural disaster and economic hardship struck those in Houston, Texas last year. While Hannah is unquestionably a great student in the classroom, she also dedicates a great amount of time to learning and obtaining more skills than professors and educators have time to teach. She has dedicated time to playing the piano from a young age while also now trying to improve as a vocalist. Hannah has also dedicated some more recent time to building up and creating a Youtube channel where she showcases her talent in music while also demonstrating her knowledge on lifestyle and fashion. The fashion industry is one that interests Hannah as she seeks an internship with fashion icon American Eagle in the future. What’s interesting is although working in the fashion industry is something that excites Hannah, it is likely not the career path she will choose. To further explain, Hannah has plans to become a graduate assistant in the Black School of Business to obtain her Masters in Business Administration before then heading to law school. She hopes to become a defense attorney and operate her own firm someday in the future.

The more people learn about Hannah, the more they become impressed by her goals and her plans to reach these milestones. She continues to work in the right direction to obtain many of these goals, but she realizes that there have been a lot of people who have helped mold her into the person she is today. When asking Hannah about her relationship with economic professors Travis Yates and Dr. Kenneth Louie, Hannah had nothing but praise for the professors who have helped her greatly in her undergraduate career. “Mr. Yates has provided me with truly unbelievable opportunities for scholarships, jobs, research opportunities, and much more. He has been someone who pushes me and helps me create my own path to success and I owe him a great deal of thanks for all he has done and continues to do. Through Mr. Yates and Dr. Louie, I have been able to do research at the Economic Research Institute of Erie which is quite an exclusive opportunity. I owe a great deal to both of these wonderful professors.” In addition to her professors, Hannah had a lot to say about the way her parents raised her and helped instill a great work ethic in her. “My parents (Libby and Anthony Carlino) have raised me to be a very independent person. They also showed me how much there is to offer the world as well as how much the world can offer me. They work super hard and live such healthy and fun lives. I strive to be a lot like my parents.” In addition to her parents, Hannah talked about her older sister Heather and how her experiences of going to college a few years prior allowed her to understand the task she was about to embark on.

While Hannah has not participated in a collegiate golf related event yet, she may be one of the most decorated athletes to compete for another reason. Since her days as a high school senior, Hannah has been awarded about a dozen different scholarship related awards for excellent leadership, academic performance, and great service in the community. She serves as a great role model on how to become such a well rounded and diverse individual at Penn State.

After understanding more about Hannah as a person and the work ethic she possesses, there is no reason to doubt that she will improve as a golfer over her last two semesters in college. Alongside her lone teammate Marissa Lynch, Carlino hopes to improve and enjoy this upcoming year as a collegiate student athlete. After deciding to end her athletic career in volleyball after her junior season, Hannah did not imagine playing a varsity again in her lifetime. Now, Hannah with the help of coach Erik Barzeski and the support of many guys on the men’s golf team will look to improve her overall ability on the golf course. Her skills in golf will serve as just an added bonus to a young woman who is destined to achieve great success for many years to come.
