Captain Marvel (2019)

Director: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck
Starring: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn
Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.
‘Captain Marvel’ is a superhero movie about…uhm…, well its about… what the heck was it about again? Oh, this was so forgettable…
Well, one thing is for sure, the film is about CGI. Yup, a typical Hollywood display of the latest in movie making: sitting behind a desk and adding everything on computer. Wow, there’s A LOT of CGI here. Where do I even begin with how much I disliked this film? The most obvious, I suppose: Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. This was the most wood-faced, lifeless superhero I’ve seen like ever. There’s absolutely no enthusiasm here. As if Larson didn’t want to make the film, but needed the paycheck. “Let me say my lines and get it over with.” – Yeah, that’s the feeling I got.
The film is too fantastical in its entirety to be taken seriously. Now add a bunch of irritating characters, and your typical Hollywood humor, and voila! – Captain Marvel. Yawn, I was so bored during this movie. I tried looking beyond all the CGI and annoying elements to find a deeper meaning here, but alas, it was plastered so thick with an incomprehensible plot that I just couldn’t enjoy it – no matter how hard I tried. I was literally counting the minutes to the ending. Oh, and note the town Mar-Velle… oh, how unoriginal, Marvel!
The ending was pure WTF!!! What were the writers smoking when they wrote this??? Judging by Nick Fury’s character, I presume this to be a prequel to the dozen or so other superhero movies featuring this character. The ending screams for a sequel …and no doubt there will be a few… yawn.
Despite what I thought of the movie, ‘Captain Marvel’ was a huge box office success, earning $1.1 billion on a $160 million budget. The film also received 61 award nominations, winning 9.
Would I watch it again? No.
