Call Of Duty, And Why I Haven’t Answered
I know its big, huge even, (the game I mean) and Modern Warfare 3 will unquestionably sale more copies than a Hannah Minx porn movie, but despite its overwhelming popularity, I just don’t understand the lasting appeal of this series. Perhaps it’s just me (and it probably is), but allow me to vent my frustrated bewilderment at why so many gamers cued in the early hours of the morning, to unleash furious vengeance on virtual, Afghani soldiers, and where the satisfaction lies amongst ruthlessly slaughtering innocents in an airport.
Ok, so I can’t pretend that this particular violent and high-profile incident offended me, it didn’t. It’s a game and should be treated as such, I mean reality can at times feel like a far more terrifying place to dwell. You can’t switch on the TV without being bombarded with horrifying images of violence from around the globe, and one former dictator, for ignorance sake lets refer to him as Colonel G, no wait?! That’s too obvious, lets call him C Gaddafi, has been orchestrating these maliciously, inhuman acts for decades, for real! And is just an example of games imitating life (sort of). Politics aside, of which I have limited knowledge, I still find myself bemused at how anyone discovers any form of entertainment from something so repetitive.
My primary, but brief play of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, was substantially long enough for me to conclude that its heavily focused on action, explosions, bangs, booms, blowing things up, crap I’m dead again, repeat; with a little tactical awareness to prevent said deaths, but friends, colleagues, acquaintances, strangers, pets etc, were quick to point out that I completely missed the point, and I probably did. The multiplayer for instance was initially a lot of fun, your constantly on the alert for any insurgents who could quickly reach the top of a dilapidated building, to gain a good vantage point for sniping, you become wary of guarding yourself from enemy combatants, stealthy attacks, as well as other dangers, but my enjoyment was somewhat diminished by the “very” competitive nature of opponent’s and allies, and I realised that the COD world is fiercely competitive playing ground, which is fine, if your good. Only the strong can survive, and I neither have the time or patience to escalate my abilities to match far more experienced and superior competitors.
Call Of Duty is clearly not the game for me. In my opinion its uninteresting, repetitive and I also fail to accept that a game such as Call Of Duty, can really improve on the games core elements annually, with any meaningful improvements or technical advances, to entice fans back yearly. My dislike of this series isn’t about sophistication or class, but all down to personal preference, and I’m just going to carry on gaming in blissful ignorance of this title. While your scrambling to survive in the war-torn streets of London and New York, I’ll be lumber-jacking to earn gold in Skyrim. I will simply never understand the appeal of it, but if you’re a fan, you won’t care what I believe, and nor should you, variety after all helps the games industry flourish. Is Call Of Duty original? No, and I dare anyone to dispute that, but are you entertained?…….. Then that’s all that matters.
Are you a fellow gamer who shares my confusion at Call Of Duty’s popularity? Or do you think I’m talking absolute rubbish? Let me know what you think.
