BULGAR KLEZMER BAND – Live @ Music Passport

Enjoy the vibrant music of Bulgar Klezmer Band in a special Music Passport live session, recorded on November 20, 2024 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Bulgar Klezmer Band is the first klezmer band based in Bulgaria. The members of the band come from diverse musical backgrounds ranging from classical, jazz, swing to folk/ethno music, but share a passion for traditional klezmer music (wedding music of Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe – Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Bessarabia and beyond).

Founded in September 2022 in Sofia, the band gave its first concerts at various city venues, becoming the first klezmer band ever to perform a traditional instrumental klezmer music set at Sofia Synagogue. The band performs instrumental klezmer dance music, as well as Yiddish and multilingual songs, Hasidic nigunim and Sephardic songs.

The group’s repertoire includes classic klezmer tunes, as well as original compositions inspired by the genre. Through their music, the Bulgar Klezmer Band aims to preserve and revitalize klezmer music while making it accessible to contemporary audiences. Their performances are celebrated for their joyful energy and ability to convey the deep cultural and historical significance of klezmer music.
