BSC to Close

Sad news to report in that Birmingham-Southern has announced they are closing their doors on May 31st of this year. It’s a story we’ve been following since last year as it became known that the institution was under funded. Their Board of Trustees made a number of attempts to obtain the funding and there was actually legislation passed that would have allowed the state to loan BSC the money they needed. The State Treasurer, however, denied the loan back in October and attempts to change that decision have failed. A new piece of amended legislation that would have helped BSC didn’t find enough support in the Alabama House of Representatives and the Board responded by announcing the closure today.

The article states the school has started planning for the transfer of students but noted that any academic scholarships will not follow them.

It’s extremely sad to see any school close but BSC is 168-years old and a nationally ranked liberal arts institution. We feel for all impacted by this decision. As for their sports teams, there will be no 2024 season. BSC is part of the SAA, which just expanded with the addition of Trinity and Southwestern in 2025. I’m sure that the conference will now be looking for a 10th team to replace BSC.
