Director: Mel Gibson

Starring: Mel Gibson, Sophie Marceau, Patrick McGoohan

Scottish warrior William Wallace leads his countrymen in a rebellion to free his homeland from the tyranny of King Edward I of England.

‘Braveheart’ was only just Mel Gibson’s second directorial film, and it is a masterpiece in every aspect. The entire production is so perfect; this is going to be a short review.

Based on fact, the film is about a commoner, William Wallace, who – against all odds – became a hero, an inspiration and a legend. ‘Braveheart’ is beautifully filmed and features stunning cinematography. Every scene is flawlessly carried by emotion – whether it be happy or sad – and fantastic all-round performances. It also features a beautiful score by James Horner.

The film is just shy of 3 hours, but it is never boring, and reasonably fast-paced. Some of the fight sequences are rather brutal, though. ‘Braveheart’ is nevertheless an incredible production everyone should see at least once.

‘Braveheart’ was a major commercial success. The film earned $212 million on a $72 million budget. It received numerous accolades and won 5 Oscars (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Effects Sound Effects Editing, Best Makeup). In total, ‘Braveheart’ received 67 award nominations, winning 33.

Would I watch it again? Despite being an excellent film, maybe not too soon.
