Book Reading Lists

The Tuesday feature of the Worldly Saints blog references something I have been reading lately. The post is meant to share some of my reflections from the latest book, magazine article or blog post I have or am reading.

This is a popular time of year for people to post lists like “Top Ten Books of 2014” or “My Favorite Books I Read in 2014.” Since I don’t read everything that comes out year-to-year, I am more inclined to come up with a list similar to the latter example.

On average I read one book per week. That is a far cry from my father who can digest a book every few days. However, I am quite content with my reading regiment and enjoy going through specific topics of study at times[1] and then at other times, I just find a book on my shelf I have not read and start.

So without delay, here is a list of the Top 10 Books I Read This Year (in order of my favorites).

  1. Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands by Paul Tripp

  2. If I’m a Christian, Why Am I Depressed? by Robert Somerville

  3. Taking God at His Word by Kevin DeYoung

  4. Heroes in the Dark by Jack Fitzgerald

  5. Fight: A Christian Case for Non-violence by Preston Sprinkle

  6. Building Up One Another by Gene Getz

  7. The Man Christ Jesus by Bruce Ware

  8. The Deliberate Church by Mark Dever and Paul Alexander

  9. Accidental Pharisees by Larry Osborne

  10. The Wichita Divide by Stephen Singular

And since our theme is book lists, here is a Top 10 List of Book I Hope to Read This Year (in no particular order):

  1. A Body of Divinity by Thomas Watson

  2. A Body of Doctrinal and Practical Divinity by John Gill

  3. And So to Bed: A Biblical View of Sleep by Adrian Reynolds

  4. Compassion without Compromise by Adam Barr & Ron Citlau

  5. Storm Kings by Lee Sandlin

  6. Red State Religion by Robert Wuthnow

  7. The Peacemaker by Ken Sande

  8. If You Bite and Devour One Another by Alexander Strauch

  9. Replant by Mark DeVine and Darrin Patrick

  10. Creature of the Word by Matt Chandler

[1] Currently, I am reading books on the topics of church disciplines and the ministry of the Holy Spirit to believers.
