Here are some books I had the privilege of reading this past month and some brief thoughts about each one.

#1 – by John A. Younts (published by Shepherd Press, 2004). I picked this up at an ACBC training conference and didn’t know anything about the author and had never read a review on the book, but it is endorsed by people I know and respect. The book contains helpful instruction on how to seize those “talking points” throughout the day with your children and make them biblically intentional. His creative suggestions are helpful and he has clear application on how to make your biblical instruction with your children seem like ordinary talk. Parents and grandparents needs to read this book!  BOOK RATING: 10 out of 10 stars.

#2 – by James MacDonald (published by Moody Publishers, 2012). Chapter 10 on the subject of friendship is worth the price of the book. Very few times in my reading experience have I read such encouraging and helpful words on the nature of biblical friendship. And the other 9 chapters on how to be a Christian who helps people change and how to change one’s own sinful habits is outstanding. I can’t think of a Christian who would not benefit from this book. I am tempted to make it required reading for every counselee I engage with. BOOK RATING: 10 out of 10 stars.

#3 – by Warren Wiersbe (published by Victor Books, 1980). What a resource this is! Even though it is brief (only 160 pages), Wiersbe exposits 13 parables: the householder, the sower, the cloth and wineskins, the two debtors, the good Samaritan, the friend at midnight, the unjust steward, the Great Supper, the strong man, the foolish farmer, the unmerciful servant, the vineyard laborers, and the pounds. I will be using this as often as I am preaching through the Gospels of Matthew or Luke. BOOK RATING: 10 out of 10 stars.

#4 – by Charles Spurgeon (published by Christian Heritage, 2006). Jesus is the end of the law. Jesus is Satan’s conqueror. Jesus has overcome the world. Jesus makes all things new. Jesus spoils the principalities and powers. Jesus destroys death. Jesus seeks and saves the lost. These wonderfully encouraging acts of Jesus are the themes of this book. You will find this to be an abbreviated Christology and soteriology but you will “walk away” with a deepened understanding and appreciation for our Lord Jesus Christ. BOOK RATING: 10 out of 10 stars.
