A giant alien spider escapes from a military lab and rampages the city of Los Angeles. When a massive military strike fails, it is up to a team of scientists and one clever exterminator to kill the creature before the city is destroyed.

With a title like ‘Big Ass Spider’ I honestly wasn’t expecting much. But this little B-movie surprised me with its production value, and the story’s substance. Some of the effects were also darn good, and the performances were not shabby at all.

Greg Grunberg stars as exterminator Alex Mathis. When he gets bitten by a spider and goes to hospital, his life is about to take an unexpected turn. A body that was brought into hospital just as he arrived, contains a spider. But, as it turns out, this is no ordinary spider. (The spider is the result of Man’s intervention with nature and meddling where they shouldn’t have! Playing God again, as usual.) Soon the hospital is crawling with military officials, and the hospital is placed under lockdown.

When Alex – who offered his help – is ordered by Major Braxton (Ray Wise) to leave, Lieutenant Karly Brant (Clare Kramer) tells him to forget about what he saw. Hospital security guard Jose (Lombardo Boyar) suggest to Alex they try to find the spider before the military does, and the two of them venture into the city.

What follows, is total mayhem, as the spider keeps growing exponentially. The film is filled with humour, action, adventure, and satire. Jose was so funny; I adored this character! Off course, there’s also a romantic interest. ‘Big Ass Spider’ is surprisingly well filmed and there honestly never is a dull moment. This was entertaining from the opening scene until the credits rolled. This B-movie had no right being so entertaining!! I loved it!

Would I watch it again? Yes.
