Better Is One Day In Your Sanctuary

“For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness” (Psalm 84:10).

For the Christian, time takes on a new dimension when it comes to worshiping God corporately. No longer is a day as good as it would be had he spent in the “courts” of God.

David puts it this way, “One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in His temple” (Psalm 27:4). Note the singleness of purpose. We attend worship services not for our own selfish purposes but for God’s. God is the object of our desire in the church service.

A “doorkeeper” was someone who stood in the threshold as visitors entered. This was a mundane, “no glory” position, and yet, the psalmist(s) would rather be in this low-end-totem-pole ministry than be living with the evil in the tents of wickedness.

There is no place better, according to the psalmist, in time or in his social life that would even compare to being in the sanctuary. The psalmist didn’t care what was done to him, as long as he could remain in the House of God.

Nothing is “better.” Our days of worship – like these – should be the highlight of your week.
