Background

This remix is very much a product of a new movement within the online Independent Music scene. Juxta John runs Atom Collector Records, which encourages the sharing and supporting of new indie music, with a system of credits earned for listening and commenting. He is also a passionate advocate of cryptocurrency based sites such as Musicoin, Channels and Steemit.

Tobi runs The #MonsterThread (with Swedish Singer Songwriter Jon Magnusson). The Monster encourages independent musicians to support each other in making and sharing music, by building social media networks. It also curates a number of playlists for its members, each with a growing following of active listeners. This is backed up by an active networking campaign, led by Jon and Tobi, to bring a steadily increasing number of blogs, magazines, Internet Radio and Indie Resource sites into the #MonsterThread fold.

‘I knew it could be something really special as soon as I heard the original track. So I pushed myself on the details more than ever before.’

‘I was really nervous throughout and feeling the pressure. My last remix misfired. The Artist loved it, but backed out at the very last minute, because some of his friends didn’t like it. Felt like I was already one remix behind on the year. Wanted to get this one right.’ – Tobi

‘Feels like something you would play driving through a city at 1am with your heads bobbing away!’ – Juxta

About the Track! UK based self described, ‘Industrial Post-Punk’ band Juxta’s ‘The Beautiful Ones’ (taken from their 2017 release ‘Welcome to your Life’), gets remixed as an electronic rocketship, driving sequencer bass, LinnDrum beats and Vocoder Vox, by Tobi.

‘They are the Beautiful Ones’, Tobi opens the track fast with a chorus of wide and tall vocoder vocals. ‘..and I want to know,’ the electronic, robotic, harmonized chorus wails flat. Beneath them, an aggressive sequencer bass, modulates and snarls at pace. The original beat tightened to the bar, and replaced by samples taken from the iconic LinnDrum. The kick punching, weighted to drive but not drag. The snare shifting with the an edge of flange. ‘Do they suffer like me?’

The bassline modulates, repeats and we drop into the first verse. ‘I sit outside and watch the beautiful ones’. The Daft Punk inspired Vocoder Vox of the chorus are Juxta-posed by distortion in the verses. The crackling, saturation vocals, an appropriate nod to the band’s punk heart. Each line is immediately echoed at the end, to the right, ‘the beautiful ones’. The repeated call back tail, fizzes in the upper mid bands. A series of air pockets blast past on the left, while a long reverse cymbal streams on the right. Each percussive element adding to the sense of speed.

The chorus returns, doubled. In the second half the bassline shifts into a repeating, three note crescendo. Quick reverses snip past down the right. The bassline modulates, repeats and we drop into the second verse. ‘They seem so confident and full of joy’. The contrast between saturated and vocoder vocals working well to bring out the lyrics of the song. A third chorus arrives, doubled and the bassline modulates and repeats. And repeats again, building in intensity and repeats once more.

The breakdown is driven hard down the centre by an angry bassline, biting and growling its way through that three note crescendo. The drums land heavier, phased twisted. Heavy breathes crash down the right, while reverses shriek the left. Snatches of vocals, taken from the verses, erupt across the mix. Tobi allows himself the indulgence to play the stereo field, but never at the expense of slowing the track down. This track is a street racer. A Ford mustang, V8 floored to the vanishing point.
