Beach Day: Armour Bay
Armour Bay, Auckland, NZ
When a rainy Saturday turned into a sunny Sunday, we knew we had to take advantage of the beautiful change in weather! Luckily, our flatmates were also keen to do so, and so we made a flatmate day trip to a nearby beach! Armour Bay is located southwest of the small town Titirangi. It’s only about 30-40 minutes away from Auckland, which is close enough to go for a few hours in the afternoon (like we did), but far enough away to escape the busyness of the city. Armour Bay is actually part of the bay that we looked out over when we visited the Arataki Visitor Centre on our way home from Piha!
The area here had a huge grass space, perfect for throwing around a frisbee. There were also several picnic tables, as well as toilets/changing rooms, and a fenced in BBQ for public use.
The ‘beach’ left something to be desired as it was covered with sharp seashells, but the water was quite warm (due to how shallow it is!). Cristina went for a swim and she was about 100m out and could stand up with the water only coming up to her knees!
On the road down to the beach is a tennis/net ball/basketball court. Always the forward thinker, Mac brought his basketball and so 4 of us had a game of 2-on-2. I don’t want to brag or anything, but I sunk the last 3 shots to bring Mac & I to victory! Watch out Steph Curry!
Armour Bay is a great spot for families (we saw one bunch that even brought paddleboards!), as well as for those just looking to escape the house for a few hours.
