AVCA Top 25 (9/11/18)
The week two AVCA Top 25 coaches poll is out, which you can find here.
Calvin retains the top spot with 54 first place votes and 1731 total points. Both of these numbers are slight increases. Colorado College stays at #2 with 13 first place votes and 1678 total points followed by CMS (up one spot), Wittenberg (down one spot) and JWU (RI). JWU moved up from 6th to 5th place in the rankings. The remaining first place votes went to CMS (1) and Wittenberg (2).
Southwestern and Carnegie Mellon both dropped from the poll while Christopher Newport (22) and UT-Tyler (23) came in. Christopher Newport was in the preseason poll but dropped out week 1. UT-Tyler appears in the poll for the first time in program history and it’s well deserved.
Looking at the West Region we have 6 teams in the Top 25 and 4 in the Top 10. The ordering is Colorado College (2), CMS (3), Trinity (7), Pacific Lutheran (10), Cal Lutheran (15) and UT-Tyler (23). In the receiving votes category, we have UMHB, UT-Dallas, Southwestern and Chapman all from the West Region.
Thomas More climbed the most this week moving from 23 to 14. Northwestern dropped the most falling from 14 to 21.
The D3VbWest Top 25 can be found here. The AVCA poll still has 5 teams that I don’t have ranked in my poll. The five teams I have in that the AVCA doesn’t are Chicago (14), UT-Dallas (18), UMHB (20), UW-Eau Claire (21) and Muhlenberg (24). I think all are more than worthy.
I mentioned last week that both Washington-St. Louis and Juniata have been ranked in every poll since it started in 1992 but were at risk of dropping out. Well, each climbed in the rankings this week.
With 70 first place votes, we should have 70 voters but this week there were 66 actual votes cast. This is actually one of the highest percentages I can remember. One coach voted last week but not this week, which means there are still 3 voters that have yet to participate. If any of those three coaches are reading this, D3VbWest kindly offers their (free) services to take over this task for you.
