AVCA Top 25 (3/24/21)

The AVCA Top 25 is out for the fifth week and the top 3 teams are the same and they are led by Colorado College and Trinity. Colorado College received 29 first place votes and 773 “adjusted” points while Trinity comes in at 729 points. The rest of the top 5 is Transylvania (2 first place votes), UT-Dallas (1 first place vote) and Carthage. The top 10 didn’t have any interlopers this week but there was some movement with the biggest being Mary Hardin-Baylor dropping back from #4 to #9.

New to the rankings were Aurora (22), Calvin (24) and Hope (25). Now that Calvin and Hope have played, I’m sure they will do much better next week just based on reputation.

Overall, the West Region has 5 teams in the Top 25. In addition to the aforementioned 4, we have Whitworth at #12. Both Austin College and McMurry are receiving votes but finished outside the top 25.

There are still a number of teams that traditionally have no business being in this ranking but who’s to say that they don’t deserve it this year? My best to them all.

One last thing is that I noticed the AVCA website only lists one more release of the poll (March 31st). Does this mean that they will end it next week with more matches still to play? I reached out to the AVCA on this but my guess is that they probably don’t want to be put in position to “name” a 2020-21 champion by virtue of finishing first in the ranking. I’ll update this article when/if I hear something back.

Update: I heard back from the AVCA and it sounds like they will do further polls. They just didn’t have a good date to stop at since each conference is going off at different times. So, an unofficial national champion is still possible.
