AVCA Top 25 (10/29/19)

The week nine AVCA Top 25 coaches poll is out, which you can find here. Chicago retains the top spot and actually fell 3 votes short of being unanimous. I believe one voter even had them third. It’s one thing to be dumb but there’s no reason to advertise it.

Chicago received 75 first place votes and were followed by Emory (with one first place vote), Carthage, Calvin and CMS. Johns Hopkins got the other 2 first place votes and finished in 7th. Rounding out the Top 10 were Trinity at 6 and then Colorado College at 8 followed by Berry and Ohio Northern. No team was dropped or added to the Top 25 this week, which means that two teams that received the number 1 ranking in their region (St. Olaf and Clarkson) are not represented.

UW-Whitewater took the big hit this week dropping from 7th to 16th while Hope jumped the most moving from 20 to 13.

My rankings came out yesterday and we are still down to only two differences between our rankings. I have St. Olaf and Wittenberg while the AVCA has Wesleyan and Johnson & Wales (RI). Looking specifically at the West Region and we still have 3 teams in the Top 25 – CMS (5), Trinity (6) and Colorado College (8). In the receiving votes category, we have only Chapman and UT-Dallas.

Still amazing to me that a team like St. Olaf is not ranked while a team that has done nothing all year like JWU (RI) is. Reputation means something to the AVCA voters.
