AVCA Top 25 (10/15/19)
The week seven AVCA Top 25 coaches poll is out, which you can find here. Due to my vacation I didn’t put this article out last week. Sorry about that.
It’s not often (like ever) to see an AVCA Top 25 where you don’t have both Washington-St. Louis and Wittenberg in the poll. The AVCA decided they had to have St. Olaf and Susquehanna in the rankings and since they were already on mine I can’t argue about it.
The top 4 remained the same with Emory getting 65 first place votes followed by Calvin, Chicago and Carthage. Calvin received 7 first place votes and Chicago 5. The other first place vote went to Johns Hopkins who sits at 9th. Rounding out the top 5 is CMS who was dropped due to their loss to Chapman last week but has returned quickly to their lofty perch.
I mentioned two teams coming in so that means two teams going out and they were Wittenberg and UW-Eau Claire.
My rankings came out yesterday and we are once again down to only three differences between our rankings. The AVCA and their New England voters have Johnson & Wales, Babson and Wesleyan while I have Chapman, Mount Union and Wittenberg. Once again and not to jump on my soapbox but the New England teams really haven’t played anyone nationally (for the most part) to know how good they really are this season. The biggest riser for the week was Johns Hopkins only going up 3 places but are finally in the top 10. St. Ben was the big loser for the week dropping from 5th to 12th.
Looking specifically at the West Region and we still have 3 teams in the Top 25 – CMS (5), Colorado College (6) and Trinity (8). In the receiving votes category, we have only Chapman and UT-Dallas.
One more week until this poll becomes rather pointless as the regional rankings will get released. It’s been fun AVCA and a little bit crazy. Sort of like my vacation but international law prohibits anything further on that subject.
Oh! Speaking of regional rankings! Check out the podcast I just dropped where I go through the teams I expect to see next week when the lists are released.
