AVCA All-Region (2024)

The AVCA All-Region awards were released today. I have updated the 2024 Awards Page with the information.

I knew these were going to drop on my way to Atlanta, but I’m not too late with the news. A big congratulations to all that made the team. Always a lot of tough decisions between 1st team, honorable mention and just missing out.

Player of the Year went to Mya Ray (La Verne). It’s kind of funny because Ray was the SCIAC Player of the Year in 2023 but Georgia McGovern won this award. This year, the opposite is true. Kind of cool that both players get recognized with both awards because they are really great and fun to watch. With Mya, you immediately notice her height and length. Once the game gets going, you notice her power. She plays 6-rotations and you might think that it would be an issue with her height but she holds her own and is huge attacking threat from anywhere. Freshman of the year went to Maddie Badger (Puget Sound) wo in her first year showed she’s one of the best blockers in the nation. Coach of the Year went to Mallory Matthews of ETBU. I love that a newer coach is being recognized and it’s so deserved after the season the Tigers have had. I’m sure both Jeff Hendershot (La Verne) and Kati Bodecker (Whitworth) were also in the running after their great seasons.

Of the 20 players chosen, 3 were from the ASC, 1 from the NWC, 7 from the SCAC and 8 from the SCIAC. The 20th member was from UC Santa Cruz (C2C Conference). The Region X All-Region AVCA committee always respects the top teams and teams that play strong schedules.

Trinity placed 4 players on the team as did CMS. La Verne and ETBU both placed 3 players on the team. Colorado College had two on the team.

Well, it all starts up again tomorrow. I will be at the Emory Regional so probably will not have a lot of insight into the other 7 regionals. The first day is always really long but so much fun. I’ll have the full schedule out tonight.

As a reminder, we do have the Fantasy Volleyball Game going on. Sign-ups are done once the matches begin. Hopefully, I’ll be able to update the scores during the day. My thought was to create a Page for that on the left side so look for that to appear sometime tonight, too. We currently have 14 teams ready to go.
