August Update
After a long wait, the first of the new season apples are just becoming ready to be picked. Fruit is colouring well but this does not necessarily mean that it ids edible within. For the early apples a rough guide, in addition to how easily they pick, are the signs that the pips are turning colour. The final test is to take a bite which is almost the only the form of apple eating in which Andrew Tann partakes. A cautionary note , Andrew has a sweet tooth and enjoys Discovery. Laxton’s Fortune and Kiddd’s Orange Red.
Crimson Beauty of Bath are being picked now – some two weeks later than usual. We can expect Discovery to begin when they are edible and sweet, at the end of August.
Cooking apples have begun with White Transparent a delicate fruit which breaks quickly in the saucepan. These freeze easily.
Plums have begun with a few Early Rivers , then a pause before Belle de Louvain and a further wait for Victoria plum, late August hopefully/
Some early pears – Jargonelle and Alexandrina Bivort will be available around the 16th of August.
The Vanessa tomatoes are now available along with round french beans, courgettes, some beetroot and soon some onions (just drying off) and sweetcorn – the latter at the farm only.
Carrots have now finished until next May. We are now sowing cabbages to repeat a supply during the winter and early spring
A busy year for wasps with nests appearing frequently.
Packs of our fruit and any other produce possible are now being sent out by courier .
