Astor Piazzolla (1921–1992) was an Argentine composer and bandoneón player, widely regarded as the most important figure in the evolution of tango music in the 20th century.

Born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, he grew up between Argentina and New York City, where he absorbed influences from classical music and jazz. Piazzolla revolutionized traditional tango by creating nuevo tango, a style that infused tango with elements of classical music, counterpoint, and improvisational jazz. His works often featured complex harmonies, dissonances, and unusual rhythms that broke away from the more dance-oriented tango of earlier generations.

Some of his most famous compositions include Libertango, Adiós Nonino, and Oblivion. He wrote both for small ensembles and full orchestras, blending chamber music sensibilities with tango’s emotional depth. Piazzolla faced resistance early on, as traditionalists accused him of “killing the tango,” but over time, his innovations were celebrated worldwide.

By the end of his career, Piazzolla was recognized as a master who elevated tango from popular dance music to a respected art form performed in concert halls. Today, his music is played by classical ensembles, jazz musicians, and tango groups across the globe.
