ASC Commissioner News
Last week, the ASC announced David Flores as their new commissioner replacing Amy Carlton. Flores was previously the Vice President for Governance at the Big 12 Conference.
Flores comes into a conference, where he starts immediately, that is struggling to maintain its membership. As detailed on the site previously, Concordia and McMurry will be leaving for the SCAC while Sul Ross State has applied for membership in DII. All three teams would leave next year. That drops volleyball membership down to 6 teams and there have been rumors that two more schools have looked at their options outside of the conference. With that said, the SCAC would be the most likely destination but I’m hearing that they are happy with their current membership even with Trinity and Southwestern leaving in 2025. All of that is to say that Flores will need to get his membership squared away as soon as possible in order to maintain their automatic qualifier across all of their sponsored sports.
The ASC article states that Flores has 25-years experience in intercollegiate athletics so he obviously has the experience necessary to succeed in this difficult position. I certainly wish him the best moving forward.
In related news, it was reported today by Texas Football that Amy Carlton will be joining the Lone Star Conference as an associate commissioner. I’m very happy for Amy in this next chapter in her working life.
