Am I Trusting God? One Way to Know for Sure

“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people from this time forth and forever. For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest on the land allotted to the righteous, lest the righteous reach out their hands to iniquity.” (Ps 125:1-3)

Trusting God results in a stable life, a calm life, a peaceful lie.

This word “trust” means “to attach oneself to, to confide in, to feel safe in or to rely upon.” In this context, trusting God refers to attaching yourself to God and God alone; it is confiding in God and God alone; it is seeking safety in God and God alone and relying upon God and God alone. It means that a man will not focus on things, cities, fortresses, militaries, politics, governments, laws, or any other man.

To look to another who is limited in power, who is deficient in their wisdom and is not able to always be ready to help is foolish. Only God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent.

Charles Spurgeon says, “To trust elsewhere is vanity; and the more implicit such misplaced trust becomes the more bitter will be the ensuing disappointment; but to trust in the living God is sanctified common sense which needs no excuse, its result shall be its best vindication” (The Treasury of David, pg. 58).

If you keep looking to the world for help, you will keep getting disappointed. Solomon summarized it the best, didn’t he? “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he WILL make straight your paths” (Prov 3:5-6).

Now, the psalmist describes what this man who trusts God looks like. He says he will be “like Mount Zion … cannot be moved … abides forever.” Often in the Bible, “Mount Zion”, which is synonymous with Jerusalem, as it stands as an emblem of permanence. It is referred to as a stable force in the region that can always be relied upon to be there and welcome any pilgrim who comes. The psalmist says a God-truster “cannot be moved.” They cannot be “turned aside” just like mountains don’t move or crumble. God-trusters are immovable because God is immovable.

Trusting God is about having a stable life. People who trust God are not swayed, persuaded, enticed, lured, kidnapped, beaten down or destroyed by the world. God-trusters don’t panic when doors close or worry when big decisions need to be made or get anxious if circumstances change. God’s trusters are not frantic and impulsive when things are unknown or uncertain. Drama queens are not God-trusters. God-trusters are stable in all their ways.

God-trusters live secure lives, because they live obedient lives. They don’t have anything to fear, because they know their God to be sovereign. They know He will bless if they obey and curse if they disobey. And if they are living a life of trusting God, they are as secure as anyone would be with mountains surrounding them.  God-trusters live secure lives because they have a sovereign God). They know Him to be faithful and supreme. They don’t need to worry or be anxious because of the ruling over the universe that the Creator maintains.

Anxiety and worry are the sinful failure to apply this knowledge of a sovereign God to particular a problem. God-trusters live secure lives, and if you want to test the level of trust in this God, ask yourself these questions, “How peaceful are my thoughts? How stable are my ways?”
