AL QAYNAH: Middle-Eastern Heavy Metal
Al Qaynah is a mysterious and enigmatic metal project that blends Middle Eastern instrumentation and atmospheres with avant-garde metal and experimental heavy music. While little is publicly known about the full identity of its members, the group has been linked to the broader circle of Secret Chiefs 3, particularly through its aesthetic, cryptic presentation, and occasional crossover of personnel.
The band name itself, Al Qaynah (القيْنة), may refer to ancient traditions or obscure linguistic roots in Arabic, hinting at something hidden, forbidden, or arcane—much like the music itself. The project has been active intermittently, often shrouded in secrecy, releasing tracks that combine droning distortion, ritualistic percussion, and Arabic maqam-based melodies, often invoking a sense of spiritual unrest or mystical invocation.
One notable track, “Jinn,” showcases their conjuration of ancient spirits through modern heaviness, creating soundscapes that feel like a metal exorcism performed in a forgotten desert temple. Traditional instruments like oud, qanun, and darbuka are woven into thick guitar riffs and industrial textures, drawing comparisons to the Ishraqiyun and Holy Vehm satellites of Secret Chiefs 3, while also nodding toward projects like Muslimgauze or Orphaned Land, but with a more occult and unplaceable intent.
Though their discography is limited, Al Qaynah’s music leaves a lasting impression on listeners drawn to esoteric mysticism, Middle Eastern heritage, and avant-metal experimentation. They’re not a band that tours or promotes themselves conventionally; instead, they appear like whispers from another world—perhaps from the ruins of ancient temples now buried beneath the sands of modern dissonance.
