ADAM NEELY – AI is doomed to fail the musical Turing test

Music may be the ultimate frontier that allows for the distinction between humans and machines, however “smart” and “creative” the latter seem to be.

And so if I ask [the machine] a musical question, does it feel like I’m getting a meaningful answer in response? Does it feel like I’m connecting with somebody, that there is a real ghost in the machine on the other side of the algorithm? I’m fairly convinced that this will never happen. No AI will be able to pass a true musical Turing test. Call Ray Kurzweil. Tell him he’s a hack. Singularity my ass…

Adam Neely

AI is never going to pass the musical Turing test. AI will get vibed at the jam session, and there’s nothing that it can do about it.

Video essays, lessons and vlogs on new horizons in music and music theory. NYC-based bass player and composer Adam Neely brings you a new video every Monday exploring what music means, and what it means to be a musician.
