A Lie: “No One Will Know”
“For my husband is not at home, he has gone on a long journey.” (Proverbs 7:19)
The context of this claim comes from an occasion when a man’s eyes are looking around his community, intrigued by the opportunities for intimacy with other women. This man meets a woman who invites him into her home for sinful sexual pleasure. He is invited to compromise himself sexually, and a compelling reason that she shares is that “no one will know.” Her husband is gone, and she tries to convince him that if he “spends the night” with her, he will have his sexual desires fulfilled and “no one will know.”
This is the seduction of every sin – especially sexual sins.
“No one will know” is one of the best lies that Satan has propagated in the world.
Porn users think “no one will know.” Adulterers think “no one will know.” Lust-filled thoughts can run rampant because this thinker is convinced that “no one will know.”’
But Someone will know, and always knows.
We read in II Chronicles 16:9, “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.” David understood this when he was confessing and repenting of his sin(s) surrounding the adultery with Bathsheba. He said, “Against you, you only, have I sinned” (Ps 51:4). He realized that God saw Him. He knew that “no one will know” was a lie.
With sin, Someone always knows. If not your spouse or close friend or child, God will always know. And God is the One who we all must stand before for every sin that we think “no one will know.”
