90th Anniversary
February 24th 1922- February 24th 2012. It is now 90 years since Guy Tann (Andrew’s grandfather) arrived here from London with his mother and sister and began establishing the orchard here. Planting of apples, blackcurrants and strawberries took place during the next few years, employing people from the village and using a horse for everything.
90 years later, just two of the original trees exist, the rest having been replaced with both new and older varieties (most of them never seen in the supermarket). Unlike 75 years ago when all the produce grown here was sent by railway to the London markets, now apple eaters come to us and we provide a service sending packs of apples throughout the UK.
The last 12 months have been the driest since the family have been here to which the trees are bound to react, some varieties being more resilient than others.
We do not factory farm apples here- size is not forced by irrigation. We consider flavour to be the most important.
We look forward to the challenges of the new season and hearing from you with your enquiries.
