And can it be that I should gain an interest in the Saviour’s blood?Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued?Amazing love! how can it be that Thou, my God, shouldst die for me.

‘TIs mystery all! The Immortal dies: who can explore His strange design?In vain the first-born seraph tries to sound the depths of love divine.‘TIs mercy all! let earth adore, let angel minds inquire no more.

He left His Father’s throne above So free, so infinite His grace EmptiedHimself of all but love and bled for Adam’s helpless race.‘Tis mercy all, immense and free; for, O my God, it found out me.

Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound in sin and nature’s night;Thine eye diffused a quickening ray— I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!Alive in Him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine,Bold I approach the eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ, my own.

Inspiration for writing: Charles didn’t have much peace and joy in his life. After a discouraging trip to America, he met with a group of Moravians in the Aldersgate Hall and made a profession of faith. He wrote in his diary, “At midnight I gave myself to Christ, assured that I was safe, whether sleeping or waking. I had the continual experience of His power to overcome all temptation, and I confessed with joy and surprise that He was able to exceeding abundantly for me above what I can ask or think.” This hymn was one of the earliest expressions of his newfound faith

9 Lessons:

  1. Salvation is undeserved.

  2. On the cross, Jesus showed us agape love.

  3. There is an element of mystery of the cross.

  4. Angels long to look into the work of salvation, and they marvel.

  5. Jesus left the glories of heaven to endure living as a Man on earth (aka, the incarnation).

  6. Before salvation, we were in bondage to sin and earthly pursuits.

  7. As Christians, we are no longer dead in our sins.

  8. As Christians, the Father sees us as if we have the righteousness of Christ (our position).

  9. Because of the cross, we can approach the God in prayer without a priest and without a Temple.
