Well, the chase was short lived. Just one game after tying the record, Alex Ovechkin went and broke the all-time NHL goal scoring record with his 895th career goal.

Ovechkin scored a power-play goal at the 7:26 mark of the second period in Sunday’s game against the New York Islanders. The goal cut the lead to 2-1 Islanders, but was the lone goal for the Capitals in a 4-1 road loss.

The loss prevented Washington from clinching the Metropolitan division. They are however still 11 points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Though it was just impressive to see him reach the record. With that under his belt he can now focus on the playoffs. Can the Capitals get him a Stanley Cup to add to his scoring record? We will just have to wait and see.

Yet for now it’s congratulations on a new NHL all-time goals leader Alex Ovechkin.
