8 Things You May Not Know About Jonathan Edwards
At the age of 19, he wrote 70 purpose statements for his life, that were called his “Resolutions.” They were like a “checks and balances” for his life committed to godliness.
D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones thought Edwards was the closest to the Apostle Paul that we had outside of the Bible.
He became a pastor at the age of 26, after his predecessor, which was his grandfather, died.
The most famous sermon preached in America – “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” – was preached by Edwards. He preached it on July 8, 1741, but had already preached it one week before. It was based on Deuteronomy 32:35b.
His legacy includes 300 pastors, 120 college professors, 60 doctors, 60 published authors, 30 judges, 14 university presidents, 3 mayors of large cities, 3 governors of states, 3 U.S. Senators, 1 chaplain of the U.S. Senate, and 1 Vice President of the U.S.
His father – Timothy – preached at the same church in East Windsor for over 60 years.
He was basically fired from his 1st pastorate over a disagreement with the congregation on whether someone needed to exhibit spiritual fruit in order to take communion.
He died due to complications from a small pox vaccination.
