8 Reasons Why “Mumble Rap” Doesn’t Deserve the Hate it Receives
“Mumble Rap” is a sub-genre of Hip-Hop that has developed during the 2010s and usually has occasional/heavy use of autotune, lack of lyrical substance, and incoherent lyrics. Due to those characteristics, fans and artists in the Hip-Hop community have criticized this sub-genre.
1. Scat Singing

Scat singing is when a singer “substitutes improvised nonsense syllables for the words a song, and tries to sound and phrase like a musical instrument.” This style of singing was used in jazz and Louis Armstrong made it popular in 1927. So incoherent/nonsense lyrics aren’t a new thing and I didn’t hear anybody complaining about scat singing.
2. “If You Don’t Like My Lyrics, You Can Press Fast Forward” – Jay Z on 99 Problems

No need to complain about “mumble rap” because you can just listen to something else if you don’t like it.
3. Despacito

Millions of people enjoy Despacito even though they don’t know a single word that Luis Fonsi or Daddy Yankee is singing. Showing the lyrical content is not necessarily needed to enjoy a song.
4. Not Every Song Has to Have Deep Lyrics

In Daft Punk’s song Around the World, those are the only three words that are said during the whole song. Vibe said that Around the World was the #1 song that “changed the game” in the 90s.
5. Music is in the Ear of Beholder

Music taste simply boils down to personal preference. Just listen to the music, make your own opinion and move on. Your opinion is not a fact.
6. Genius.com

Clearly someone understands what “mumble rappers” are saying if there’s pages for their song lyrics. For example, Young Thug, Lil Pump, Lil Uzi Vert and Future songs.
7. “Mumble Rap” is Not a Real Sub-Genre of Hip-Hop

I feel the term “mumble rap” was created by people that hate that kind of music. The term is pretty lazy because it seems that term is just thrown at any rapper that uses autotune somewhat and is not the best lyricist.
8. Change is Unavoidable

This quote is people that hate “mumble rap” in a nutshell. Upset that the current generation is doing it differently than the ones in theirs’.
