O Love that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee;I give thee back the life I owe, that in thine ocean depths its flowMay richer, fuller be.

O Light that foll’west all my way, I yield my flick’ring torch to thee;My heart restores its borrowed ray, that in thy sunshine’s blaze its dayMay brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to thee;I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain,That morn shall tearless be.

O Cross that liftest up my head, I dare not ask to fly from thee;I lay in dust life’s glory dead, and from the ground there blossoms redLife that shall endless be.

Background for writing: A blind man who struggled with mental health wrote this hymn. He said he wrote it on June 6, 1882 at the age of 40. He said this hymn was the fruit of his mental suffering. He never claimed divine inspiration, but he did say that he wrote faster than any other piece he had written, and that words for the hymn just flowed naturally from his head to the paper he recorded on.

6 Lessons:

  1. The love of God is omnipotent, eternal and steadfast.

  2. His love compels us to serve him with our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  3. When we face darkness, it is the Light of the World that not only brings hope but sustains us.

  4. We cannot afford to avoid God when trials have arrived.

  5. In every trial, there is good.

  6. Salvation comes through no one else.
