“5G is to 4G as a computer is to a typewriter”

5G (fifth generation) wireless technology is changing the world rapidly.  It will significantly change our lives.  I believe it will be positive and open new avenues for our children entering the job market albeit in new fields and roles.

The most immediate and pressing challenge that we face with China and others is the race to develop and deploy the worlds 5G communications network.  We are well behind in this effort and other countries are trying to globally dominate in this technology.  We must face this challenge.  AT&T and Verizon led 4G deployment and we need to catch up with 5G.

Why should you care?  This technology is the backbone of what’s referred to as the 4th Industrial Revolution.

• Smart homes and cities

• Fully autonomous cars

• Long distance surgery

A current movie can be downloaded on your cell phone in 6 minutes with 4G technology.  With 5G it takes 3 seconds.

4G technology support only 2000 connected devices per square kilometer.  5G supports one million devices in the same space.

5G enables IoT and so much more.  Think Nest, smart refrigerators, home security, and may other areas of our lives.

The US must catch up in the world wide race in this technology so others don’t dominate 5G and thus have control of our data.  My main point is that it’s a new computing paradigm and within this challenge lies enormous opportunity.  “The only constant in life is change.”  Heraclitus
