4 Lessons from “The Solid Rock”
My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.
His oath, His covenant, His blood support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.
When He shall come with trumpet sound, oh, may I then in Him be found;Dressed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.
Refrain:On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.
Date: 19th century
Writer(s): Edward Mote
Background for writing: Edward Mote grew up in poverty. He got saved when he turned 16 years old and became a devoted church member. He helped plant and build a church that he was offered the deed to. All he said he wanted was an opportunity to preach the Gospel. He preached there until 1 year before his death – about 60 years. He wrote about 150 hymns, one of them being this one.
4 Lessons:
Without the perfect righteousness of Christ, we are without hope.
Even when we cannot sense the presence of God, we can trust that He is there.
Jesus Christ will return in a glorious reappearing.
Trusting in anything or anyone else is a vain activity.
