4 Lessons from “Lead On, O King Eternal”
Lead on, O King Eternal, the day of march has come;Henceforth in fields of conquest Thy tents shall be our home.Through days of preparation Thy grace has made us strong; And now, O King Eternal, we lift our battle song.
Lead on, O King Eternal, till sin’s fierce war shall cease,And holiness shall whisper the sweet amen of peace. For not with swords’ loud clashing, nor roll of stirring drums; With deeds of love and mercy the heav’nly kingdom comes.
Lead on, O King Eternal, we follow, not with fears,For gladness breaks like morning where’er Thy face appears.Thy cross is lifted o’er us, we journey in its light; The crown awaits the conquest; lead on, O God of might.

Background for writing: The author of this hymn was about to graduate from Andover Seminary (not in Kansas). His classmates asked him to write a poem to commemorate the occasion. They also requested that the poem be singable. One of the classmates said to him, “Now the day of march has come and we must go out to follow the leadership of the King of kings, to conquer the world under His banner.” It would be one of countless poems that would later be compiled into a 2-volume poetry work. It would later become a war balled.
4 Lessons:
The God we follow into eternity is eternal.
The only true protection we have from the world and the Evil One is God.
Our weapon against sin is personal holiness.
The cross of Jesus leads to our own crown of righteousness.
