Background for writing: Some have called this hymn “the national anthem of Christendom,” because it has been translated into almost every known language in the world. It’s author was a French pastor who had fled to Switzerland, and later England, to escape persecution. He eventually left the state church of England to join Charles and John Wesley in their evangelistic efforts.
