2020 College Football Playoffs Thoughts
S. Samek
Well the college football season is now over and bowls are ready to begin. Though four teams were selected above the rest to compete for a national title. With the four chosen being the topic of alot of debate, here is my take on which teams got in and which didn’t.
First we start with Ohio State. They won the Big 10 as usuall and went 6-0 during the season. Though it maybe a slight knock on them that they only played six games, which included the Big 10 championship, they did defeat three top 25 rated teams in thse games. So it does feel a bit cheap that thy played so few games and got in. Yet with an undeafeaded record, a power-five conference title and of course name and fan recognition it’s hard to kick them out.
The second team in the playoffs is Clemson. Clemson went 10-1 on their way to an ACC championship. Their lone loss was at Notre Dame by seven with their back up quarterback at the helm. They did avenge the loss to the Irish in the ACC title game, which gives them big points in my book. They absolutely deserve a shot to defend their title.
Team three is Notre Dame. They did go 10-1 and reached the ACC title game, which is pretty solid. They did also hand Clemson their only loss. Yet why two teams from the ACC? I’m not a big fan of having multiple teams from the same conference reach the final four. If you only get one ACC team, they are out. If they were still Independent, ok I’d consider it.
The final team in is Alabama. Undefeated, power -five conference title and they played a full season. They have four wins against the top 25 which puts them 100 percent in the playoffs. In fact I would call them the biggest lock to be in the playoffs.
Now for the teams on the outside.
Cincinnati is probably the first team that people will be like oh we got snubbed. The went 9-0 and won the American Conference title. They have three wins over ranked teams which does help put to bed the they don’t play anybody argument. Though I don’t quite think people want to watch this team as much as any of the other power five teams, which I feel could have played a role in them not getting in.
Oklahoma won the Big 12 title over Iowa State, who was another team looking to get into the playoffs. Though the key thing to Oklahoma being ousted was the magic number of two, as in two losses.
Texas A&M made a run going 8-1 with their lone loss to Alabama. They did beat Florida, but their schedule does look pretty easy for an SEC one. With a head to head loss to Alabama and no conference title to fall back on I can see this team on th outside looking in.
Then we have Costal Carolina. Yep they went 11-0 and won the Sun Belt and have two wins against ranked teams including a talent BYU. Though it’s the same thing with Cincinnati they don’t play in a power-five conference. Same with undefeated San Jose State.
I think the selection committee did pretty good this year picking the teams. I think these are safe bets.
