2 Soul Sisters, Lusby, Calvert County, Maryland

UPDATE: I wondered about the toast. Not only did it arrive hot, but it tasted better andhad a better texture than other loaf bread. It turns out that the bread is made from scratch and baked in-house. They also make everything from crab cakes to scrapple in house. It really is food like grandma made.

Dale Leibach, part of the neighborhood diaspora, paused his wanderings to visit us in Cove Point. We had dinner Saturday night at Clarke’s Landing, which you’ve read about here (I’ll update). On Sunday morning, we went to 2 Soul Sisters for an early breakfast. I’m counting the Gospel music that was playing softly as attending a church service.

2 Soul Sisters is tucked into the Lusby Town Center shopping plaza. Most of the space is taken up by the kitchen and counter, but there are four five-person tables that are free at 9:00 am on Sunday. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table.

We ordered and then sat down. For me it was two eggs over easy, sausage, potatoes. and toast.

Dale had scrambled eggs with bacon, toast, and potatoes,

and Nancy had pancakes with two eggs over easy. Nancy’s order eluded my camera — or my attention, anyway. I may have been distracted by my breakfast.

The food, which is cooked in cast iron pans rather than on a steel flat top, is delicious. The potatoes especially benefit. They come with just the right amount of onions, and a bit of salt and pepper finish them beautifully. (Potatoes always need a bit of salt and pepper.) My sausage was a good, flavorful country sausage, and Dale’s bacon was crisp, as bacon really must be. As you can see, one of my egg yolks had a touch of unwanted solidification, but not as much as it appears, just a light skin. Nancy’s eggs were perfectly cooked, and Dale’s were creamy. Nancy’s pancakes had a great texture and buttery edges.

The toast was a triumph. How many times have you been served room temperature toast at breakfast? Or perhaps it would be easier to recall the few times the toast has arrived hot. Here, the toast arrived hot and fresh from the toaster, with a nice smear of butter. Breakfast involves a lot of foods that take widely different amounts of time to cook. It’s very difficult to have all of the food arrive together, fresh and hot at the same time. The bread itself was exceptionally good, too, the texture denser and the pieces somewhat smaller than regular supermarket loaves. I wonder where they get it.

I definitely will return to 2 Soul Sisters. You can see the menu on the website, and there are a lot of attractive options, including a lot of seafood. And they offer delights that you don’t often see, like a pork chop sandwich. I haven’t had a salmon cake since I don’t know when. I may go there, rather than to I’se Da Bye’s for my first taste of scrapple.

It’s definitely worth your time to explore Southern Maryland, with lots of state parks, historic sites, and wonderful waterside restaurants with ultra-fresh local seafood. Spend an evening in Solomons after one of the big-name concerts, and have a great breakfast at 2 Soul Sisters.
